On 13 October 2007, Southampton Container Terminals (SCT) became the first UK container terminal to implement the US Customs and Border Protection’s Secure Freight Initiative (SFI). SFI is a trial programme which involves the scanning of all US bound containers for nuclear or other radiological materials.
SCT is already participating in the US sponsored Container Security Initiative (CSI) which involves US Customs personnel working alongside their overseas counterparts to identify high risk containers. The SFI trial is an extension of that.
Campbell Mason, Managing Director, SCT, said:
“SCT and DP World fully recognise the paramount importance of improving the security of goods moving around the world and safeguards against the threat of terrorism. We are therefore pleased to be associated with the Secure Freight Initiative trial programme and look forward to continuing to work with the US and UK authorities toward the achievement of that objective.”
Port Qasim, Pakistan, also managed by DP World and Puerto Cortez, Honduras are the two other ports taking part in the trial.
