Visitor Safety Initiatives
Transfer Area

Previous articles appearing in eMonthly have mentioned SCT's aim to improve its safety record by reducing its "lost time injury frequency rate" by 20% over 2004. The target applies to all 3rd parties using the terminal not just SCT employees.

Recently SCT selected hauliers to be the focus of a safety campaign over a two week period.

A concerted effort was made to ensure that as regular visitors to the terminal, the haulage community understood the procedures at SCT that would ensure their own safety.

Prior to the start of the initiative all hauliers were notified of the safety drive, through VBS. The initiative involved five members of the Landside Team visiting the pregate, transfer areas and the empty and reach stacker parks to carry out safety observations for an hour a day over a two week period.  During the observations, members of the team spoke with individual drivers advising them of the procedures in place to ensure their safety while present at the service points around the terminal.

Following the observations the members of the team informed the hauliers' traffic offices to advise of the safety issues they felt needed highlighting and requesting that the safety requirements be shared with all their drivers likely to visit the terminal.

“We have received positive feed back and support from our customers, who have recognised the importance of health and safety inside the Terminal and we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of drivers abiding by the safety procedures,” commented Steve McCrindle, Landside Manager, “and we wish to thank everybody for their continuous support."
