Investment in Engineering

New extension to the 204 Workshop and StoresCompeting as an international terminal operator within the global market place requires a strategy of continuous investment. Southampton Container Terminals continues to demonstrate such a policy not only in front end operational areas, but also in the infrastructural and support activities which underpin operational improvement.

Earlier this year substantial improvements were introduced for hauliers with the introduction of the mandatory Vehicle Booking System, new gate logic and the new terminal layout.

Substantial investment was also made with the purchase of new straddle carriers, as a strategic drive to reduce the average age of the fleet of some 90 machines. Clearly maintaining such a volume of equipment requires dedicated staff and associated facilities.

The latest investment of £2.25 million encompasses the addition of two dedicated maintenance bays that can accommodate 1 over 3 high straddle carriers at a height of 15 metres. The project has also generated a substantially improved stores facility and integrated accommodation to house all engineering staff including recent recruits employed to enhance the preventative maintenance schedule of mobile equipment at SCT.
