Southampton Container Terminals (SCT) in conjunction with Becker Marine Systems Communication is now able to offer visiting vessels the ability to connect to wireless broadband, via the umc.connect portnet service, when they are alongside the terminal.
Using the umc.connect portnet service creates a number of benefits for ships visiting the terminal which include interference free, reliable, fast and secure wireless internet as well as seamless connectivity between the vessel and the terminal. The service offers the visiting ship unlimited time and volume at a flat rate across the world which enables cost savings on satellite and mobile phone communication for shipping lines and their crews.
Talking about the new service, Brian Thomson, Systems Manager, SCT, said:
“We have been working with Becker Marine Systems Communication over recent months to install the landside infrastructure to facilitate this innovative service for shipping lines visiting the terminal. The first vessel to successfully use the umc.connect portnet service was the Houston Express on the 6 May 2008.”
Thomas Mueller, Managing Director, Becker Marine Systems Communication, added:
“We have developed a unified wireless system especially for the harsh marine RF environment, which integrates all port communication and IT systems with purpose-built, wireless broadband infrastructure. This enables terminals to access significantly improved wireless coverage at lower cost by using umc.connect portnet.”
