During a wet, windy and snowy(!) May weekend 22 teams participated in the 24 Peaks Challenge which took place in England’s spectacular Lake District.  Described as “probably one of the most demanding mountain events ever organised as a charity challenge” the event, sponsored by Lloyd’s Register, was in aid of Seafarers UK.  Seafarers UK is a charity which supports seafarers of all backgrounds: veterans and serving members of the Naval Services, the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets, their families and communities. Over the last ten years Seafarers UK has given over £26 million in grants to help sailors and their families, retired seafarers, veterans, Sea Cadets and the whole maritime community.

The challenge involved climbing 24 peaks in the Lake District, all over 2,400 feet, within 24 hours.  SCT was invited to join a team made up from Lloyd’s Register staff and others who had completed the course 8 years earlier.  Patrick Walters, Managing Director and Derek Smith, Business Development Manager represented SCT and managed to raise nearly £7,500 out of the team’s £51,000 total.  “It was a real physical endurance challenge and not helped by the predictably bad weather on the mountains”, said Patrick Walters “but the organization and teamwork were fantastic; most important was the money that we managed to raise for Seafarers UK and I would like to thank all those who responded to my begging letters!”

Any of you who can get 6-8 fit individuals from your employing company to participate next year should block out 7th/8th July 2007 and go to http://www.seafarers-uk.org/events/24peaks for more details.
