Some twenty-two team leaders and equivalent from SCT and TCS recently attended the one week long P&O Ports Institute Foreman/Team Leader course, and fourteen managers attended the two week long Frontline Manager course.
Both courses have similar themes and are designed to provide key knowledge needed to develop team leadership and management skills. They both have a reputation for being very intensive. But that does not mean there is no time for a little fun, as evidenced by the pictures!

The Foreman/Team Leader course has more focus on operational issues while the Frontline Manager course focuses more on performance improvement and leadership in times of change.
A range of individual and team activities provides the means for attendees to start to get to grips with some of the theory and practice of management and supervision which continues after the end of the residential part of the course.
Attendees of the one week course have to complete some work on risk assessment and are also likely to be included in project work in which groups from the two week long FMI course are engaged.
These projects continue after the FMI course for approximately three months, culminating in formal presentations to the Managing Director and his team. Each project is focused on adding value to the organisation in some way, either directly, or indirectly by improving communications and awareness. In fact, of the five projects for this year’s FMI, two are involved in improving communications and awareness. These projects are designed not only to cover the cost of the training but also to provide very real opportunities for attendees to put in to practice some of the theory and tools they have used on the course.
Provided by the P&O Ports Institute, these courses are part of a growing and global portfolio designed to establish a common approach to management & leadership, operations and engineering activities. DP World visited the FMI course here in the UK and has taken a keen interest in these courses with a view to adopting them throughout the rest of the DP World business. It is interesting to note that many of our competitors are not yet benefiting from such an approach to training.Related Articles
