The first components of the new super post-panamax gantry cranes arrived at Southampton Container Terminals (SCT) on Tuesday 25 March 2008 aboard the BBC Zarate from Fenit, Ireland. The components, some pieces weighing in excess of 110 tonnes, were unloaded using the vessel’s derrick cranes.
Talking about the new cranes, Russ Broughton, 206 Workshop Manager, SCT, said:
“Taking delivery of the crane components marks the first stage in the construction phase of the two new super post-panamax gantry cranes and over the coming weeks we will start to see the cranes take their shape in Lima stack.”
The two new super post-panamax gantry cranes represent an investment of over £10 million and are scheduled to be commissioned into operation during June. SCT has also placed an order with Liebherr Cranes for a further two super post-panamax gantry cranes which will be delivered next summer.
