March Safety Campaign – The Fatal 5 – Mobile Equipment

Safety Campaign Posters
As part of its on-going efforts to improve safety performance, SCT has implemented the P&O Ports ‘Fatal 5’ initiative at the terminal. Fatal 5 ‘Champions’ from Operations and Engineering have been selected to focus on five areas which have historically contributed to fatalities in the terminal operating industry: working at heights, handling loads, using mobile equipment, pedestrians and using outside contractors. SCT is also ensuring that employees, contractors and visitors to the Terminal are all aware of simple safety guidelines known at the ‘Rules to Live By.’

At the start of March, a safety campaign has been launched reminding everyone of the ‘Rules to Live By’ when using Mobile Equipment. Toolbox talks have been given to all operational and engineering shift workers confirming the rules to follow when operating mobile equipment. These include use of seatbelts, obeying speed limits and not using hand held radios when driving. A series of four eye-catching posters with hard hitting slogans have been developed, and are prominently displayed around the site. These posters have also been used as a rolling ‘screen saver’ for the recently introduced Intranet kiosks.
