To enable SCT to continue to meet the continuing expansion in the beam of modern containerships the extension of the boom on crane four has now been completed. The extended boom now enables the crane to work vessels up to 18 containers wide.
Earlier this year the crane was moved from the quayside, using specialist transportation, to SCT’s crane workshop to allow the works to take place. The works involved removing the boom entirely from the crane structure, extending the boom, then returning the boom to the crane structure (pictured below) and finally, relocating the crane back to the quayside.
Following a commissioning phase, the crane is now back in operation.
Talking about the project, John Maybanks, Head of Engineering, said:
“It is important that the equipment and facilities at SCT are continually modernised by incorporating the latest technologies and that capacity is enhanced to handle larger vessels. Increasing the outreach of our crane fleet enables us to handle cargoes on wider vessels, keeping SCT competitive and continuing to meet the growing needs of our customers."
