Gantries improve reefer service

SCT have continued their investment programme to improve operations with the commissioning of two new Gantries for the stacking of refrigerated (reefer) containers.  The two gantries, 90m and 150m long, now provide us with a safer and more efficient environment for stacking reefer boxes.

The facility has 282 positions (207 40ft’s and 75 20ft’s) enabling us to stack three high compared with only two high in the past.  Concentrating the reefer stacking frees up in excess of 100 teu of ground slots, providing valuable stacking space for general containers.

The Gantries also provide a safer environment in which to work. Not only does it act as a barrier between ‘man and machine’, but also removes the necessity for using ladders to access reefers for connection / disconnection and general monitoring.

Together with the Gantry, other enhancements have been made to our reefer operation. New handheld devices used by our reefer controllers have been introduced to replace older units providing greater reliability and functionality.  We have also introduced an automated stacking system which will place reefers in optimum positions resulting in more  efficient and effective use of stacking space.
