The city of Southampton’s local paper, the Daily Echo, ran a competition asking their readers to vote for their favourite Southampton landmark to be reproduced by artist Meschac Gaba in a model city, comprising buildings from across the world made from sugar.

The final vote showed the favourite landmark was the Bargate in the city centre, however as it received so many votes, the artist decided to also include the container terminal into his sugar city as pictured.
The cranes, containers and ship that make up the container terminal take their place alongside the Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal and Sydney Opera House.
The sugar models will be exhibited at the John Hansard Gallery at Southampton University, as part of the Port City exhibition, until Saturday 26 January 2007.
