SCT is working closely with ABP, Freightliner and the relevant public bodies in preparation for the launch of an information paper to focus national and local Government’s attention on the important issue of the need for a rail network fit for purpose to carry the increasing number of 9’6", hi cube containers, to and from Southampton and other parts of the national network.
9’6” containers are now c. 30% of SCT’s total throughput and growing at around 3% each year and whilst train operating companies, such as Freightliner and EWS, provide capacity through special low profile wagons these are expensive to buy and maintain.
The information paper will clearly identify the issues associated with gauge clearance to allow conventional rail wagons to travel from Southampton to meet the West Coast Mainline. The paper will also provide supportive evidence to assist public sector stakeholders, e.g. South Eastern England Development Agency (SEEDA) in understanding all of the issues, in order that they can make informed decisions to facilitate delivery of rail gauge enhancements.
Making efficient use of the rail network is both of National and Regional importance and will provide benefits to road users and to people living in the area through which currently more than 16,000 container lorry movements per week take place. Most containers are heading up and down the A34 corridor passing through rural Hampshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire and with the prospect of container road traffic doubling in the next 10 years it is vital that the required improvements to the rail network are made.
We will ensure that all interested parties are advised of the launch.
