Since the start of the year, Southampton Container Terminals Ltd (SCT) has ordered 15 new straddle carriers from manufacturers Noell and Kalmar, representing an investment of over £7.5 million.
All nine of the 4 high Noell straddle carriers are now in service. Two of the five Kalmar straddle carriers have also been handed over for operations. The remaining machines, including an additional sprinter straddle carrier, are due on site during October.
Talking about the investment, John Maybanks, Head of Engineering, SCT, said:
“SCT is a straddle carrier operation, with over 100 carriers in its fleet. It is extremely important for us to continuously invest in new machines to ensure that we can carry out planned maintenance, provide a reliable service and ultimately meet our customers’ requirements.”
The straddle carriers arrive in large sections and are constructed, on site at the terminal, by a dedicated team of engineers from the straddle carrier manufacturer.
