Southampton Container Terminals Ltd (SCT) Expands Its Footprint with a Further 10.5 Acres of Land

Southampton Container Terminals Ltd (SCT) continues to expand the size of the terminal boundary by taking on a further 10.5 acres (approx) of leased land from Associated British Ports.

The new land, previously used for ‘roll on/roll’ off operations, was handed over in early September - more than a year ahead of the previously estimated handover date.

Campbell Mason, Managing Director, SCT, said:

“This new land, which is in addition to the 13 acres taken on at the start of the year, has taken the terminal footprint to over 213 acres.  We are delighted that ABP has been able to accelerate the availability of this additional land as it has provided us with further capacity to handle the continued high volume of boxes moving through the terminal.”

Approximately 7 of the 10.5 acres are already being used for operations. Repaving works as well as the removal of some existing structures are currently underway and due for completion by the end of November.

The acquisition of the new land forms part of SCT’s long term plan to meet the growth in demand at Southampton.  In addition, SCT has ordered 2 super post-panamax gantry cranes (for delivery May 2008) and 15 new straddle carriers.  SCT has also accelerated its recruitment programme, with more than 100 being trained and added to our operational labour force.
