Security at SCT

The events of September 11th 2001 changed the way that the world looks at Security. It was considered to be a risk that terrorists could use the maritime transport system to move weapons of mass destruction, or where a Country’s economy could be affected by the disruption of a Port Facility.

Ports and Terminals designated as ‘Port Facilities’ were required to develop a Security plan in accordance with the requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Code.SCT had it’s Security Plan approved by the Security Secretariat of the Department for Transport (TRANSEC) in April 2004, since this date the security arrangements have developed to the stage that many of you will have seen on your visits to the Terminal.

All access points into the Terminal and the Controlled buildings are either manned or controlled by a proximity pass system which operate automatic gates or turnstiles. The entire perimeter of the Terminal and all access points are capable of being monitored by an extensive CCTV system with the images being stored on digital recording platforms.

Lorry drivers and visitors who have already visited SCT will almost certainly have encountered the search regime which is currently in place.Security staff are trained to carry out a range of searches of drivers and visitors, their possessions and their vehicles (this includes lorries and their cabs), all visitors and drivers are liable for these searches as a condition of entry to the Restricted Areas.

As we go forward, Security arrangements are constantly being reviewed to ensure that SCT plays its part in the fight against terrorism.
