Terminal Capacity Increased

At SCT, during the first six months of this year, we have undertaken significant civil development work in order to increase the terminals annual capacity by 400,000 TEU, to close to 2 million TEU. This means that the terminal can now hold 35,500 TEU in the stack at anyone time, whereas in 2004 the maximum capacity was 28,500 TEU. The increased stack capacity will ease some of the storage congestion experience last year.
Derek Smith, SCT’s Business Development Manager said, "This year we have really pulled out all the stops and we are investing all our efforts into ensuring that this coming, and future peaks are met with as little disruption as possible. The changes we have made will contribute towards keeping the trucks moving through the Terminal in less than one hour, a smooth and efficient feed to/from the rail terminals, which in turn, will have a positive impact on improving ship productivity"
This has been achieved by making a number of changes, including an extra 4 acres leased on 202 berth; relocating and doubling the size of both the empty container storage area and the full forty foot reach stacker area. As well as this, the existing stack layout has been reconfigured to make better use of space, supported by new IT processes.
