Record Week for Landside Operations

Landside Operations at Southampton Container Terminals (SCT) saw a record week between Monday 7 January 2008 and Friday 11 January 2008.  A total of 21,513 containers were handled by road and rail combined.

This is the largest number of containers handled in a five day period with the busiest day being Thursday 10 January 2008 when 4819 containers were handled, by road and rail combined, in a 24 hour period.

Thursday 10 January 2008 saw the terminal record broken for the number of lorries handled in a 24 hour period.  A total of 2390 lorries were handled which is a 5% increase on the previous record set in October 2007.

Talking about the records, Steve McCrindle, Landside Manager, SCT, said:

“This record was a great start to the year, particularly in light of the poor weather conditions we experienced at the start of January.  It is important to remember that as well as breaking records, we have continued to maintain our service levels to ensure that the average turnaround time of a lorry does not exceed one hour.  In addition to this, we are regularly able to put out over 140 VBS bookings each hour.”
